Fever Beach by Carl Hiaasen
Pure Hiaassen mayhem with sex, guns, bizarre characters and the politics and culture of Florida. Crazy fun.
True to form, Hiaassen brings us another off-the-wall Florida tale. Replete with babes, guns, nutcases and mayhem, it provides the veteran reader of this author’s works plenty to chew on.
Dale Figgo is a white nationalist with a special quality: he was ejected from the Proud Boys for being too dumb. Not easy to do, but Figgo works hard at it and is always striving for new frontiers to conquer. His big mistake is picking up a hitchhiker to help throw out antisemitic messages secreted in baggies of sand in gated neighborhoods around Miami. This act unwittingly brings him to the attention of Twilly Spree, an individual who mysteriously has unlimited funds which he spends freely on schemes to thwart plots such as Dale Figgo hatches. He’s nearly as unhinged as the white power boys but with an environmental bent and with his own acute sense of justice obtained at his own hand.
Add to the mix Viva Morales who works for a shady but wealthy couple named Mink who employ her as a personal assistant which puts her in the unenviable position of being privy to some deeply dark occurrences supporting Figgo and his boys via a corrupt politico. Twilly and Viva become involved and embark on some pretty wild adventures in the world of political and social sabotage.
Figgo’s outfit, Strokers for Liberty, consisting of malcontents and deviants all aligning with the basic tenets of white supremacist ideology are planning to disrupt a local election affecting the crooked congressman’s fate. Sadly, their planning is abysmal and the entire escapade devolves into a scenario wherein they are beaten bodily by a group of drag queens. Pure Hiaassen. Things spiral down, if that can be believed, further helped along by Twilly and Viva. Chaos, carefully orchestrated, efficiently executed and hilariously realized is the result. The political commentary is clear but delivered with such gusto and humor that it lands with unusually potent impact. Great fun, but perhaps not for some on one extreme.
